School Year Abroad is proud to offer an exceptional scholarship opportunity for French language students to live and study in Rennes at SYA France for the academic year. Two $20,000 grants will be awarded to students with demonstrated leadership skills, strong academic credentials and interest in French language and culture without regard to family financial need. What is School Year Abroad (SYA)? SYA is a nonprofit educational organization founded by Phillips Academy in Andover. Since 1964, we have offered rigorous academic and homestay programs to students from both independent and public schools. SYA France, founded in 1967 in Rennes, is located in an elegant 19th century townhouse in a quiet residential neighborhood, steps away from the city center. Classes include intensive French language, French literature, art history and French society and culture, all taught in French by native instructors. English and math are taught in English by American teachers. Students live with host families, take the PSAT, SAT and Advanced Placement examinations, are assigned a college counselor and receive full U.S. high school credit. The academic program is supplemented by approximately three weeks of travel throughout France. How do I apply for the scholarships? Applicants studying French at level two or above will be eligible to apply to SYA France and the Merit Scholarships. To apply for an SYA France Merit Scholarship, you must submit an application for admission to SYA, as well as an additional letter of recommendation, an extracurricular activities list and two essays, explained on the next page. Though merit applications must be submitted on paper, admissions applications may be completed online at SYA.org. If you’d prefer to complete a paper admissions application and you have not yet received one, please fill out a request on SYA.org by following the links for “Admissions” and “Request more info”.
