The Knudsen pump is a pump without moving parts that works for a gas under rarefied conditions (at low pressure and/or at micro scale). Typical Knudsen pumps are long channels with a periodic structure consisting of alternately arranged narrow and wide channels, with a periodic temperature distribution. An alternative solution consists in replacing the narrow segments with curved channels with the same width as the wide segments. Numerical results obtained by the DSMC method are reported in the literature for such a configuration (see Aoki K. et al., “A diffusion model for rarefied flows in curved channels”, Multiscale Model. Simul., 2008, 6(4), pp. 1281-1316). The goal of the project is to design and fabricate a prototype of Knudsen pump based on this principle, and from its experimental analysis to discuss/validate the numerical simulations results.
