Recent work in ultra-cold, high-spin physics has led to the realization of a controlled laboratory setting for the interaction of alkali earth atomic species with a large number of internal degrees of freedom. These SU(N) symmetric interactions allow the investigation of exotic field theories in an experimentally accessible setting. Physical properties of quantum degenerate SU(N) systems include quantum phase-transitions, entanglement and squeezing. These have potential applications to novel atomic clocks and sensors. It may be feasible to find a low energy Higgs-like boson in cold atoms: a plasmonic excitation of a charged Fermi gas. The role of the Ph.D. position will be to focus on deriving spin hydrodynamic equations and developing an analysis of spin entanglement dynamics. Initially, this will be an analytic investigation. As the software for simulating these systems matures, the Ph.D. student will combine these equations with results from the state-equation calculations generated numerically. This investigation will also include calculation of plasma modes and Higgs-type mass effects in the charged plasma case, and possible early-universe analog studies..
