Chair in Economics of Disasters PhD Scholarship in New Zealand, 2014

Victoria University is offering PhD scholarships to the applicants must be well-trained, empirically bent students with an interest in insurance markets, agricultural or health economics and/or economic geography. A Master Degree in Economics (or a related discipline) is required. Good knowledge of STATA or GIS is preferable. 2-3 PhD scholarships will be awarded up to three years. Scholarships include $25,000 annual stipend plus tuition fees. The application deadline is 1 July 2014.. The research done by Victoria University’s Chair in the Economics of Disasters and his postgraduate student team is focused on many aspects of disasters, including disasters’ short- and long-term impact on economic activity, in particular on income distribution and poverty, on fiscal spending and revenue, and on employment and prices. Policy questions related to optimal prevention and mitigation policy in a disaster’s aftermath are also critically evaluated. Other work includes projects evaluating the connection between disasters and climate change scenarios and comparing between recent catastrophic events in Japan, Thailand, New Zealand, China, and Vietnam. Previous projects have also included research on disasters in the United States, and in Chile..  Scholarships are available for pursuing PhD degree at Victoria University.
